Plants Chapter 3 Flashcards
In plants what are nitrates for?
Makes amino acids and proteins for cell growth.
Without plant will be stunted and have yellow leaves
In plants what are phosphates for?
Makes dna and cell membranes and is needed for respiration and growth.
Without plants will have poor root growth and purple leaves
In plants what is potassium for?
To help enzymes needed for photosynthesis and respiration
Without plants will have poor flower and fruit growth and discoloured leaves
In plants what is magnesium for?
It is very important as it makes chlorophyll
Without plants have yellow leaves
What are the three factors that affect photosynthesis?
Light intensity
Amount of CO2
The temperature
What is the xylem for?
Transporting water and mineral salts from the roots up to the leaves in the transpiration stream.
What is the phloem for?
Transports sugars like sucrose and amino acids. This movement of food is known as translocation.
What is translocation
Movement of food substances around the plant.
What is transpiration?
The loss of water from the plant.
What four factors affect the rate of transpiration?
Light intensity (photosynthesis)
Temperature - warmer is faster rate
Wind speed
Humidity
What equipment is used to estimate transpiration rate?
Potometer
