Neutralises stomach acid and emulsified fats
How does food move through the gut
Peristalsis
What does the amylase enzyme do
Breaks down starch into maltose
What does the Maltase enzyme do?
Breaks down maltose into glucose

What is ingestion?
Putting food or drink into your mouth
What are the five main stages of digestion?
Ingestion Digestion Absorption Assimilation Egeetion
What is digestion?
The breaking down of large insoluble molecules into small soluble molecules
Mechanical ways of digesting are teeth and stomach muscles
Chemical ways of digesting are digestive enzymes
What is absorption
Moving molecules through the walls of the intestine into the blood.
Food is absorbed in the small intestine
Water is absorbed in the large intestine
What is assimilation?
When food moves into cells they become me part of those cells e.g. amino acids are used to make cellular proteins
What is egestion?
Faeces being excreted
