Plants Flashcards
Xylem adaptions and functions
Xylem has thick walls to waterproof it
It transports water and minerals upwards (from the roots to the stems and the leaves) for photosynthesis called the transport stream
Phloem adaptions and functions
Transports sugars made in photosynthesis from the leaves to the rest of the plant this is called translocation
Cell sap can move from one phloem cell to the next through pores in the end walls
Epidermal tissues adaptions and functions
No chloroplasts, transparent so sunlight can reach later beneath
Covers the surface and protects them
Often secrete a waxy substance which water proofs the leaf
Palisade mesophyll adaptions and functions
Contains chloroplasts which carry out photosynthesis
Spongy mesophyll adaptions and functions
Contains some chloroplasts for photosynthesis but has big air gaps to make diffusion easier
Label the plant
Waxy cuticle Upper epidermis Palisade mesophyll Spongy mesophyll Xylem Phloem Air spaces Lower epidermis Guard cells stomata
Respiraron equation
Glucose+oxygen makes energy+carbon dioxide+water
Photosynthesis equation
Carbon dioxide+water with sunlight and chloroplasts makes glucose+oxygen
