Plants Flashcards
What type of plant have: Roots Xylem tissue Cones Needle shaped leaves?
Conifers
Habitats containing a wide range of species have less or more biodiversity?
More
What may happen if one species goes extinct? Give an example
It can affect other organisms and may cause them to become extinct too.
What is the definition of “hybrid”?
When two different species sexually reproduce the offspring is known as a hybrid, however hybrids cannot sexually reproduce.
Why can’t hybrids sexually reproduce?
Because they are not fertile
What is a synonym for a fertilised egg?
Zygote
What is asexual reproduction?
Asexual reproduction is a type of reproduction where gametes are not needed. Instead part of the parent plant forms a new plant, this means that the offspring will be identical to the parent.
Give an example of asexual reproduction.
Strawberries or potatoes
Name the male reproductive organ
Stamen
Name the female reproductive organ
Carpel
List the female parts of a plant
Stigma, style ovary, ovule
List the male parts of a plant
Anther and filament
How many “kingdoms” are there?
What are they for?
There are 5 kingdoms that classify characteristics of organisms into groups.
Each pollen grain contains a female gamete
False, each pollen grain contains a male gamete
Define pollination
Pollen grains ripen inside anthers which then split open. The grains are carried away and transferred to the stigma of other flowers.
List 4 ways pollen can be transported
Animals, wind, water or insects
How do plants attract insects?
Scent, colours and nectar
What is self pollination
When pollen grains form a plant land on the stigma of the same plant. Plants try to stop self pollination and ensure cross pollination.
If a pollen grain reaches a stigma of the same species it can grow a _____________
Pollen tube
What is the process when a zygote splits into to many different bits called?
Cell division
When cell division has finished what is the end result?
An embryo
What is seed dispersal?
It’s when seeds are transported around and spread out so they can grow
Name as many types of seed dispersal methods as you can
Animal poop, wind, water, explosions
What is germination?
The growth of a seed into a plant
What resources does a seed need for germination to occur?
Sunlight, heat, water, oxygen
What is respiration?
A process where oxygen is used to release energy from glucose
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is a process where carbon dioxide and water are converted into glucose to provide energy for plants.
