Breathing/Respiration and yeast Flashcards
Cells use oxygen to release ______________
Glucose
What is the definition of aerobic respiration?
It is the release of energy occurring in a series of chemical reactions.
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Oxygen+ glucose Carbon dioxide +water

What is the definition of breathing?
Breathing is when the muscles between the ribs and the diaphragm change the size of the lungs. The movement is called ventilation, there are two stages of ventilation, inhaling (breathing in) and exhaling (breathing out)
What cleans the cells free of mucus, dust, dirt and microorganisms?
Cilia, tiny hairs that sweep the mucus out into the gullet where it can be swallowed
How does smoking affect your breathing?
The chemicals and heat from cigarettes stop the cilia working, mucus then collects in the lungs.
What is gas exchange?
In the lungs, some of the oxygen from the air enters the blood. At the same time, some of the carbon dioxide in the blood plasma enters the air in the lungs, the swapping of gases is gas exchange
Name two examples of where yeast can be found
In bread and alcohol
What are the two types of respiration
Aerobic and anaerobic
What is fermentation?
Fermentation is the breakdown of glucose in ethanol and carbon dioxide by respiring micro organisms such as yeast
What is respiration
Respiration is the process of releasing energy
What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration
Aerobic- uses oxygen
Anaerobic- Does not use oxygen
What is the equation of anaerobic respiration
Glucose—> carbon dioxide +ethanol
How does yeast reproduce?
Uses a process called budding
What process of cell division does bacteria use
Binary fission
