Plant Transport and Coordination Flashcards
What does the Xylem transport?
Water and minerals
What is the Xylems structure?
- Made up of thick walled vessels
- They are dead cells and contain no cytoplasm
- They are completly hollow
What structure is the Phloem?
- This consists of living cells
- Cell walls made of cellulose
What does the Phelom transport?
- It transports sucrose and amino acids from leaves
What does the Phloem need to move sucrose and amino acids and what is it called?
- Energy
- This is called translocation
In a plant stem, where is the Xylem and the Phloem located?
State how the Xylem transports water?
Define Transpiration
Transpiration is the evaportation of water from the surface of a plant
State the process of Transpiration
What is the funciton of the trasnpiration stream?
- To carry mineral ions to the leaves
- To keep turgor pressure high in the leaf cell
What affects the rate of transpiration?
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Wind Speed
- Light intensity
- Water supply
How do we measure transpiration?
A potometer
Label a diagram for measuring transpiration
How do we set up a potometer?
- The potometer must be underwater
- Cut the stem of a shoot
- Put the shoot stem into the bung
- Grease the joint with plenty of petroleum jelly
- Put the bung into the potometer
- Make sure the tap is closed then lift the ensemble out of the water
- Leave the end of the capillary tube out of the water until an air bubble forms then put the end into a beaker of water
Define tropism
The growth of a plant towards a directional stimulus
