Plant Transport Flashcards
What is a dicot ?
Plants that produce seeds that contain 2 cotyledons act as food stores for developing embryo to form first leaves after germination
What are cotyledons?
In the embryo and provide nutrients
What is the parenchyma in the xylem?
Packs around xylem vessels and stores food containing tannin deposits
What is tannin?
Toxic to insects
What are companion cells in phloem?
Large nucleus and lots of mitochondria needed to help load assimilates into sieve tubes
What is plasmodesmata in phloem?
Little channels that connect sieve tube members and companion cells that allow movement of glucose in sap for photosynthesis
What is endodermis in roots?
Layer of cells that surround vascular bundle
What is the cambium in the stem?
Meristems that divide to produce new xylem and phloem
Is is the Collenchyma in the leaf?
Provides structure and flexibility to leaf to allow bending in wind without breakage
What is the role of epidermal tissue in leaf?
Covered with waxy cuticle to reduce water loss by evaporation
What is the role of palisade mesophyll in leaf?
Contain most chloroplasts and on upper side of leaf which gets most light
What is the role of spongy mesophyll in leaf?
Lots of air spaces to increase rate of diffusion
What is the role of lower epidermis in leaf?
Lots of stomata for gas exchange
Function of xylem in plants?
-vascular tissue carries dissolved minerals and water up the plant
-structural support
-food storage
Where are xylem vascular bundles found in roots?
-centre where centre core is xylem tissue
-helps roots withstand pulling strains when plants transports water upwards and grows
