Plant Tissues Flashcards
What are the 4 main groups of plants tissues
- Meristematic tissue
- Epidermal tissue
- Ground tissues
- Consisting tissues (Vascular tissue)
What is the function of meristematic tissue
Divide by mitosis to increase the length of the plant
Where is meristematic tissue found
Tip of root
Tip of shoot
Middle of stem
What is the function of epidermal tissue
Protect tissues below, and allow light for photosynthesis
What is epidermal tissue covered in
A waxy cuticle
What do modified epidermal tissue cells include
Guard cells of stomata eg. Root hairs
What are the 4 type of ground tissues
- Parenchyma
- Chlorenchyma
- Collenchyma
- Sclerenchyma
What is the most common type of tissue in plants
Parenchyma (packing tissue)
What is the function of Parenchyma tissue
Fill spaces between other tissues and storage of water and nutrients
What are the 2 type of chlorenchyma cells
- Palisade
- Spongy
What is the function of Chlorenchyma tissue
Make food by photosynthesis and store starch
Where is Chlorenchyma tissue found
Between epidermal layers
What is the function of Collenchyma tissue
Provide support
What is the difference between Collenchyma and Chlorenchyma
Collenchyma is thickened in the CORNERS and has no chloroplasts
What are Sclerenchyma tissues and what is their function
They are fibers and they provide support and strength to the plant
