Plant Tissue Flashcards
What does the epidermal tissue do?
Covers the plant.
What does the mesophyll do?
Carries out photosynthesis.
What do the xylem and phloem do?
Transport substances around the plant.
How does water move through root cells?
Through osmosis.
How does water pass up the xylem?
Water is evaporated from the leaves, and as water molecules tend to stick together, more water is drawn up from the xylem cells and the process repeats.
What is transpiration?
The process of water molecules evaporating and drawing up more water molecules.
What happens to the concentration of the water as its drawn through the root hair cell?
It travels down the concentration gradient, making it more dilute.
What is translocation?
The movement of food substances from the stems to growing tissues and storage tissues.
What is the difference between xylem and phloem vessels?
Xylem vessels consist of dead cells which have thick, strong cellulose cell wall and a hollow lumen. Phloem vessels consist of columns of living cells.
What is unique about phloem vessels compared to xylem vessels?
Phloem vessels contain cytoplasm which goes through holes from one cell to the next.
