Physics - 18/09/17 Flashcards
Name a renewable energy source.
Wind, solar, tidal, waves, hydroelectric
Name a non-renewable energy source.
Coal, oil, gas.
What is a disadvantage of fossil fuels?
They produce greenhouse gases.
What is a disadvantage of nuclear power?
They produce nuclear waste which has a long half life.
What is the difference between primary and secondary sources?
Primary sources are energy sources which occur naturally. Secondary sources are energy sources made using primary sources. For example, electricity is a secondary energy source.
How do fossil fuel plants work?
Fuels like coal, oil and gas are burned in order to boil water. The steam produced is used to turn a turbine which turns a generator, producing electricity.
How is energy collected from water?
Tides or waves are used to turn a turbine, turning a generator and producing electricity.
How is energy collected from the sun?
Infrared rays from the sun are collected by solar cells.
How is energy collected by wind?
Wind turns a turbine, turning a generator which generates electricity.
What is happening to global energy demand?
It is increasing due to increasing population and modern lifestyles which demand transport and technology.
