Plant Systems (leaves and stems) Flashcards
What is a xylem cell?
Dead plant cells joined together into long tubes through which water flow during transpiration
What is transpiration?
The gradual release of water vapour from leaves to continue the pull of water up from the soil
What is a phloem cell?
Living cells that carry sugars made in photosynthesis to all cells of plants
What is translocation?
The movement of sugars made in photosynthesis from the leaves of plants
What are the components of a leaf from top to bottom?
Waxy cuticle Upper epidermis Palisade cells Air space Guard cells/stoma/lower epidermis
What are the symptoms of nitrate deficiency in plants?
Stunted growth as they need the nitrate ions for protein synthesis
What do plant cells have that body cells don’t?
Cell walls
Vacuole
Chloroplasts
What are the 5 uses of glucose from photosynthesis?
Respiration to release energy Making cellulose for growth Poducing fats or oils for storage Combining with nitrates to make amino acids and proteins for growth Producing starch for storage
What is an auxin?
A plant hormone responsible for cell elongation.
What is hydrotropism?
A plants ability to grow towards water
What are gibberellins?
Plant hormones responsible for cell elongation, seed dormancy and germination
What is ethene?
A plant hormone that ripens fruit
