Menstrual cycle Flashcards
What are the four hormones involved in the menstrual cycle?
Oestrogen
FSH (follicle stimulating hormone)
LH (lutenising hormone)
Progesterone
Describe the role of FSH
Causes an ovum to mature in the ovary
Stimulates ovaries to produce oestrogen
Where is FSH released?
Pituitary gland
Describe the role of Oestrogern
Causes the uterine lining to thicken in the first half of the menstrual cycle
In the pituitary gland, high oestrogen concentration switches off release of FSH and switches on release of LH
Where is Oestrogen released?
Ovaries
Describe the role of LH
Stimulates ovulation
Where is LH released?
Pituitary gland
Describe the role of Progesterone
Maintains uterine lining if fertilised ovum implants
High concentrations of progesterone in pregnancy to stop the menstrual cycle.
Where is Progesterone released?
Ovaries
