Plant Systems: Flashcards
Characteristics of Plants:
-multicellular
-green in colour (typically)
-can not move from place to place
-all have anchoring substances
What do the systems in plants include:
-2 body systems (Root and Shoot)
-3 tissue systems (dermal, vascular, and ground)
Function of the Root system:
-anchoring the plant
-absorb water and minerals from the soil
-store food
Main parts of the root system:
-roots
Human used of root system:
-a food source (ex. carrots, sweet potato, sugar beet, and ginger)
-fibres used in basketry
-natural remedies
Function of shoot system:
- Conduct Photosynthesis
- Produce flowers
- transport water and nutrients to various parts
Main parts of shoot system:
-leaf
-flower
-stem
Function of the leaf in the shoot system =
-photosynthesis structure
-contains chloroplast
Chemical Equation of Photosynthesis:
light energy + CO2 + H2O —– turns into —— glucose + O2
Function of flowers in the shoot system =
-developed for sexual reproduction
-contain male or female reproductive structures
Function of stem in the shoot system =
-support branches, leaves, flowers, transports materials
-contains vascular tissue
-food storage
-photosynthesis
Human uses of the shoot system:
-corn
-rice
-vanilla
-chocolate
What are Meristematic Cells?
-unspecialized cells within the plant cells
Types of Plant Tissues:
-dermal
-vascular
-ground
Dermal Tissue is made of _______
tissues that form the outer surfaces of plants
