Organization of Living Things: Flashcards
Tissues:
A collection of specific types of cells (eg. muscle, nerve)
Types of Tissues:
-Connective
-Epithelial
-Nerve
-Muscle
Connective Tissue:
Supports, connects, and protects the body’s organs (bones, blood, cartilage, and ligaments)
-can be made of living cells and non living material
-connect bones to muscles
-connect blood to body systems (carries nutrients and waste)
Epithelial Tissue:
Tightly packed cells that cover surfaces in the body (skin, organs, etc…)
-one layer thick = easy for substances to pass through (in lungs —- oxygen and carbon dioxide)
-many layers protect organs under the layers
Nerve Tissue:
Very complex tissue for sensory and sending signals throughout the body
-makes up the brain, spinal cord, and nerves
-special nerve cells are found in the eyes, ears, skin, nose, and mouth
What are the three types of nerve tissue?
- Sensory = carries info from body to brain
- Motor Neurons = carries info from brain to muscles
- Interneurons = carries info between sensory and motor neurons to the brain
Muscle Tissue:
Made of cells that contract and release:
-some are voluntary (V) — need to think to move
-some are involuntary (IV) — move without thinking
Muscle Tissues are found in…?
- Skeletal Muscle Tissue (V) = surrounding bones
- Smooth Muscle Tissue (IV) = organs such as stomach, esophagus, arteries, and veins
- Cardiac Muscle Tissue (IV) = heart
