Plant systems Flashcards
What similar functions to plants have that are similar to animals
- Gas exchange
- Internal transportation of nutrients throughout the plant
- A method of reproduction
What are the 2 systems of a plant
Root system
- Organs/parts of the plant grow under ground/ below the surface however, are still exposed to air (aerial).
Shoot system
Oragsn/parts that grow above the surface
What is a root system responsible for
- Anchoring the plant to the ground
- Absorption of water and minerals from the soil
- Storage of food (glucose)
What is the shoot system composed of
- Leaf
- Flower
- Stem
What is the shoot system responsible for
- Photosynthesis
- Reproduction of the flower
Explain the leaf
Photosynthesis usually occurs in the organelle called a chloroplast (absorbs light)
Light energy + co2 + water = Glucose + oxygen
flower
Flowers usually have a female and male structure however some species have one for each sex
Explain the female flower
The female flower is called the pistil - consists of a stigma, style, and ovary
- When the egg is pollinated a seed is created inside the protective coating of the fruit
Explain the male flower
- It is called a stamen - Consists of anther and filament. This is where pollen is produced.
Explain the function of a stem
- Support the branches, leaves, and flowers.
- Transports nutrients from and to flowers, fruit, leaves, and roots.
