Plant System Flashcards
What is the main function of the shoot system?
System in flowering plants that is specialized to
- Conduct food and water
- Photosynthesize
- Reproduce sexually
What is the main function of the root system?
system in a flowering plant, fern, or conifer that
- anchors the plant
- absorbs water and minerals through root hairs
- conducts water and nutrients
- stores food and nutrients
What does the plant system consist of?
-leaf
-flower
-stem
-roots
They are all specialized cells
What is dermal tissue system?
Tissues covering the outer surface of the plant
What is vascular tissue system?
- All plant tissues responsible for conducting materials within the plant
- Like animal circulatory system
What is the ground tissue system?
All plant tissues other than those that make up dermal and vascular tissue systems
What is the function of the leaf in the shoot system?
- photosynthetic structure of the plant
- organelle called chloroplasts performs photosynthesis
What is the function of the flower in the shoot system?
- pollination
- reproduction
What is the function of the stem in the shoot system?
- supports branches, leaves, and flowers
- provides a way to transport materials
- vascular tissues is contained for carrying substances to and from roots, leaves, flowers, and fruits
- some are specialized for food storage, protection, photosynthesis and reproduction
What is the palisade layer?
-tightly packed ground tissue below the leafs upper surface where the maximum light is
What is the spongy mesophyll?
-Loosely packed ground tissue through the interior of the leaf
What is the function of cuticle?
thin layer of wax on the outside of the leaf that keeps the leaf from drying out and prevents gases from entering the leaf by direct diffusion through surface cells
What is the function of stomata?
Openings in the leaf surface that are surrounded and controlled by pairs of special epidermal guard cells
What is the function of guard cells?
control opening of the stomata. Guard cells bend outward to open stomata, collapse inward to close stomata.
Where are the stomata located and why?
