Q

What is the main function of the root system?

A

system in a flowering plant, fern, or conifer that

  • anchors the plant

Q

What is the function of the stem in the shoot system?

A
  • supports branches, leaves, and flowers
  • provides a way to transport materials
  • vascular tissues is contained for carrying substances to and from roots, leaves, flowers, and fruits
  • some are specialized for food storage, protection, photosynthesis and reproduction

Q

What is the function of cuticle?

A

thin layer of wax on the outside of the leaf that keeps the leaf from drying out and prevents gases from entering the leaf by direct diffusion through surface cells

14
Q

What is the function of guard cells?

A

control opening of the stomata. Guard cells bend outward to open stomata, collapse inward to close stomata.

16
Q

When would stomata open?

A

When it is sunny and there is lots of water in the leaf.

17
Q

When would the stomata close?

A

When it is dark (night) or if there is not enough water in the cell.

18
Q

How to guard cells open and close?

A

When there is lots of water guard cells expand and bend apart, which opens stomata. When there is not enough water guard cells become soft and collapse, closing stomata. The vacuole works the same way, when there is lots of water, the vacuole expands and keeps the cell plump but when there is not enough water the vacuole collapses and softens.

19
Q

How to plants obtain water?

A

Root hairs absorb water by osmosis and the water is then transported by the xylem from the roots up the stem and into the leaves
