Plant Structures And Their Functions Flashcards
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water —> oxygen + glucose
What reaction is photosynthesis?
Endothermic (takes in energy)
What happens inside chloroplast?
Contains chlorophyll which absorbs sunlight
What does chlorophyll do?
Absorb sunlight
Limiting factors of photosynthesis
- light intensity
- carbon dioxide
- concentration
- temperature
Xylem vessels
Transporting water and minerals through the plant
From the roots to leaves + stem
Phloem
Using energy to transport sucrose around the plant
For growing regions and storage
Where does sucrose come form?
Root
Transpiration
Movement of water from root, though xylem and out the leaves
Factors that affect transpiration
Bright light = increase
High temperature = increase
High winds = increase
High humidity = decrease
Stages of transpiration
- Starts w/ evaporation of water from cells inside the leave
- Water vapour diffuses though the air spaces, then out though the stomata
- Water passes from the xylem into the leaf, replacing the water that’s been lost
- Water drawn into root hair cell + up xylem vessel the into leaf
What does root hair cells do?
Absorb water and mineral ions
What is the root hairs purpose?
To give plants large surface area for absorption
What does a stomata do?
Allow CO2 and O2 diffuse in and out
Allows H2O escape during transpiration
What does stomata look like?
Pores on lower surface of leaves
