Plant Structure B2.3 Flashcards
What happens in the leaf?
Photosynthesis, Gas Exchange, water evaporates out.
What is the xylem?
Tubes through the stalk of a plant, carry UP water and minerals.
What happens at the plants roots?
Water enter through osmosis, mineral ions - Active transport.
What happens in the flower of the plant?
Reproduction - where the reproductive organs are.
What is the Phloem?
Tubes that carry sugar and other nutrients to where they are needed.
Leaf structure can be seen in three sections:
Top
Middle
Bottom
Describe each of these sections and what is included within them.
Top:
Wax cuticle; water proof, prevents water loss
Upper epidermis; Transparent to let light through
Middle:
Palisade cells; Photosynthesis takes place
Spongey Mesophyll (middle) ; gaps that facilitate gas exchange, large surface area.
Bottom:
Stomata; Holes in the lower epidermis, allow gasses in and out
Guard cells; Control what goes in and out - gasses.
