Genes, Inheritance & Selection B5 Flashcards
What is the process by which asexual reproduction happens?
Mitosis
Describe the process of mitosis.
Splitting of two cells to form two identical nuclei. Means that ‘offspring’s’ daughter cells will be identical.
What is one advantage of sexual reproduction and one advantage of asexual reproduction?
Sexual - offspring becomes adapted
Asexual - only one organism needed to reproduce.
What is a genome?
The entire genetic code of an organism
What is a Gene?
portion of DNA that codes for protein.
What is a genotype?
An organisms specific genetic coding (inside coding)
What is a phenotype?
How DNA coding is expressed in physical characteristics.
What is an Allele?
different versions of the same gene
Which is the strongest allele? Dominant or recessive?
Dominant
How can you calculate the probability of an inherited characteristic?
Using a punnet square, which has the big B and little b to calculate the probability of a dominant or recessive allele.
What are homozygous and heterozygous alleles?
Homozygous - two of the same (bb or BB)
Heterozygous - two different (Bb or bB)
