Photosynthesis B1.4 Flashcards
What is the word and balanced symbol equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water ——-> Glucose + Oxygen
Above and bellow arrow = light and chlorophyll.
6CO(2) + 6H(2)O —-> C(6)H(12)O(6) + 6O(2)
Is photosynthesis an exothermic or endothermic reaction?
Endothermic - energy is transferred from the environment during it.
Where does photosynthesis occur and how?
Chloroplasts - Chlorophyll absorbs light. Energy is transferred to the chloroplasts from the environment in the form of light.
What are the limiting factors of photosynthesis?
Light intensity
Concentration of CO(2) / Carbon Dioxide
Temperature
What is the equation for calculating light intensity?
Light intensity = 1/ distance (d) squared
(Inverse square law)
Which two limiting factors will level off (on a graph) when too much is used in photosynthesis?
Light and Carbon Dioxide
How does temperature effect the rate of photosynthesis?
The temperature has to be just right, when the temperature is too low, photosynthesis happens slowly. If the temperature is too high, the enzyme becomes denatured and the rate of reaction decreases dramatically. (Around 45 degrees)
Glucose is a product of photosynthesis. What is Glucose needed for? Give two examples.
Respiration
Making fat/starch
Making amino acids
Making cellulose
What is the particle for investigating the effect of light intensity on photosynthesis?
Cut pondweed in upside down tube, submerged in a base of water.
Measure distance between the light and the pondweed.
Measure the volume of oxygen produced in one minutes (measure the bubbles)
Repeat at different distances
What law is used to describe how light intensity links to photosynthesis?
Inverse square law. For however much the distance increases (eg 2) , the light intensity decreases (eg 1/4) by the square of that amount.
What is a dependant and independent variable?
Independent - Variable that is altered during the experiment
Dependant- The variable that is tested or measured
