PLANT NUTRITION Flashcards
Refers to any substance required for the growth and maintenance of an organism
NUTRIENTS
What are the two types of organism based on mode of nutrition?
AUTOTROPHS AND HETEROTROPHS
Organism that obtain their energy from sunlight and chemicals to produce their own food
- Examples: plants; chemosynthetic bacteria
AUTOTROPHS
Organisms that cannot make their own food and obtain energy from other organisms
- Example: fungi, animals
HETEROTROPHS
What are the nutritional requirements of plants?
Water, carbon dioxide, essential nutrients and elements (macronutrients and micronutrients)
What are the examples of macronutrients?
C, H , O, N, K, Ca, Mg, P
What are the examples of micronutrients?
Cl, Fe, B, Mn, Zn, Co, MO
Route of absorption of water and minerals through plasmodesmata
SYMPLAST ROUTE
Route of absorption of water and minerals along cell walls
APOPLAST ROUTE
Small channels that directly connect the cytoplasm of neighboring plant cells to each other, establishing living bridges between cells
PLASMODESMATA
Slender extensions of specialized epidermal cells that greatly increase tge surface area available for absorption
ROOT HAIRS
Localized swelling roots of certain plants where bacterial cells exist symbiotically with the plant
ROOT NODULES
A symbiotic interaction between the a young root and a fungus
MYCORRHIZAE
Enumerate nutritional adaptation by plants
A. Symbiosis of plants and soil microbes
B. Symbiosis of plants and fungi
C. Parasitism
D. Predation
