Plant Nutrition Flashcards
Where do living organisms get their energy from?
Photosynthesis
What is the balanced chemical equation for photosynthesis?
6’CO2 + 6’H2O -> C6’H12’O6 + 6’O2
What is the role of chlorophyll in photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll is able to capture energy from light, and then transfers it to the water and carbon dioxide molecules to react and form glucose.
Why do leaves appear green?
Because chlorophyll absorbs red and blue wavelengths, but reflects green.
What must glucose be transformed into to be transported around a plant?
Sucrose.
What are some of the uses of glucose in plants?
Storage, making Cellulose, Nectar, Amino Acids, Chlorophyll.
Name factors that affect photosynthesis.
Enzyme quality, Temperature, CO2 levels, Light intensity, Chlorophyll and Minerals, Water availability
Name the layers of the leaf.
Cuticle, Upper Epidermis, Vacuole, Palisade Cells (Chloroplasts and Vacuoles), Spongy Mesophyll Layer, Lower Epidermis, Guard Cells, Cuticle.
What is the difference between Xylem and Phloem?
Xylem transports and stores water and water soluble nutrients, Phloem transports sugars sugars, proteins, and other organic molecules.
