Cell Organelles Flashcards
Describe Plant and Animal Cells
Describe the structure of a Cell Membrane
The cell membrane is a Phospholipid Bi-Layer (little wiggly lollipops). Ithas proteins embedded in it. It is semi-permeable, so little stuff can go through it
Describe the structure of the Cytoplasm
Thin, gel-like fluid inside the cell membrane.
Describe the structure of the Nucleus
A sphere that surrounds the DNA. It has pores.
Describe the structure of the Mitochondia
A cigar shaped organelle. It has two membranes with the inner membrane being highly folded.
Describe the structure of the Ribosomes
A two part molecule with a main unit and a sub-unit. It is made of RNA.
Describe the structure of the Cell Wall
A mesh or net made of cellulose that goes around the Cell Membrane.
Describe the structure of the Chloroplasts
A large sac containing stack of pancake-like structures filled with Chlorophyll.
What is the function of the Cell Membrane?
1) Keeps the internal environment of cells separate from external environment
2) Communicates with other cells and allows stuff into your cells
What is the function of the Cytoplasm?
Holds all chemicals in the cell, and lets them and the organelles move.
What is the function of the Nucleus?
1) To protect the DNA of the cell
2) Holds the chemicals needed to make copies of DNA (RNA)
What is the function of the Mitochondria?
The site of respiration
What is the function of the Ribosomes?
It uses copies of DNA to make proteins
What is the function of the Cell Wall?
To provide support for Turgor Pressure (the force pushing out within the cell)
What is the function of the Cholorplasts?
Site of Photosynthesis
