Plant Hormones Flashcards
What is Auxin?
Auxin is the plant hormone that causes growth. Produced at the top of the plant’s shoots. Diffuses down the shady side causing the plant shoot to bend.
What are Gibberellins?
Gibberellins are a group of plant hormones that grow stunted/dwarf varieties (eg: leaves and stem) to normal sizes, as well as control seed germination
What is Ethene useful for? (When used by plants)
Ethene regulates both growth and senescence (response to damage) as well as growth of fruit.
What is Phototropism?
Phototropism is the plant’s response to light, the plant growing in the direction of light.
What are Mitochondria used for?
Mitochondria are used to generate chemical energy for biochemical reactions.
What is Geotropism?
Geo tropism is the plant’s response to gravity, positive geotropism = roots (down), negative geotropism = stem branches (up)
What is IVF?
IVF is women are injected with FSH and LH to produce the eggs, eggs are harvested, then they are stored by freezing them, then later these eggs undergo cell division (mitosis) to produce an embryo and later fertilised for the female to carry when reinserted.
What is Tropism?
A Plant’s growth response to a stimulus (e:g. light, water, gravity)
