Plant cells Flashcards
What is the cell wall? (what and function)
A rigid, tough, plasma membrane that surrounds each cell in a plant, composed primarily of cellulose, and provides structural support, protection, and prevents excessive uptake of water.
What are the 3 parts of a plant cell wall?
- Primary wall
- Middle lamella
- Secondary wall
What is the primary cell wall in a plant cell? (what and function)
Made out of cellulose and pectin, it is a thin and flexible wall that surrounds plant cells and allows expansion as the cell grows.
What is the middle lamella in a plant cell? (what and function)
A thin layer that cements together the primary cell walls of two adjoining plant cells.
What is the secondary cell wall in a plant cell? (what and function)
A rigid layer in plant cells made from cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin that provides structural support and protection.
What is chloroplast? (what & function)
An organelle in plant cells that are the site of photosynthesis.
Has a double membrane, it’s own genetic information, and is autonomous for growth and reproduction within the cell.
