Eukaryotes Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Endosymbiont Theory?
A
Mitochondria and chloroplasts were once free-living proto-bacteria (prokaryotic) cells that were engulfed by an Archaean host cell = created eukaryotic cells
2
Q
What is the evidence for the Endosymbiont Theory?
A
Mitochondria and Chloroplast have a double membrane with their own genetics and ribosomes for autonomous growth and reproduction.
3
Q
What are the key features of eurkaryote cells?
A
- compartmented by endomembrane system
- Have mitochondria (plants ALSO have chloroplast)
- complex cytoskeleton
- multiple linear chromosomes housed in a nucleus
- advanced signalling cascades
4
Q
What are examples of Eukaryotes?
A
land plants, fungi, animals
5
Q
A
6
Q
What are the 2 features of reproduction only seen in Eukaryotes?
A
- Two parents give rise to offspring with a unique combination of gene from those two parents
- Sex and sex differentiation are phenomena only occurring in eukaryotes
