State the tissues in leaves
Epidermal Palisade mesophyll Spongy mesophyll Xylem Phloem
Epidermal tissue
covers the whole plant covered by a waxy cuticle which helps prevent water loss by evaporation
Upper epidermis
transparent so that light can pass through it and be absorbed for photosynthesis at the palisade layer
Palisade layer
contains lots of chloroplasts (with chlorophyll) to absorb sunlight they are close to the top surface where they can get the most light
Xylem and phloem
form a network of vascular bundles transport water and nutrients around the body take glucose produced in photosynthesis away provide support for the structure
Lower epidermis
full of little holes called the stomata (controlled by guard cells) which allow exchange of gases and controlled water loss
Spongy mesophyll
has many air spaces between cells to allow for a large surface area to increase the rate of diffusion of gases in an out of cells
