Digestive Enzymes Flashcards
What breaks down STARCH?
Amylase
What breaks down PROTEINS?
Protease
What breaks down LIPIDS?
Lipase
What is STARCH broken down into?
Glucose
What is PROTEIN broken down into?
Amino acids
What are LIPIDS broken down into?
Fatty acids + Glycerol
What is GLUCOSE used for?
the substrate for respiration
What are AMINO ACIDS used for?
to synthesise proteins
What are FATTY ACIDS + GLYCEROL used for?
used for cell membranes, making hormones, insulation, energy stores
Where is AMYLASE produced?
salivary glands
pancreas
small intestines
Where is PROTEASE produced?
stomach (called pepsin there)
pancreas
small intestines
Where is LIPASE produced?
pancreas
small intestines
Where is BILE produced and stored and released?
Produced - liver
Stored - gall bladder
Released - small intestines
What does BILE do?
EMULSIFIES fats/lipids - to break down into tiny droplets so the surface area increases which increases reaction rate with lipase therefore increasing digestion
NEUTALISES hydrochloric acid from the stomach - usually at pH 1-2 the hydrochloric acid needs to become alkali
Otherwise digestive enzymes would denature and lower reaction rate thus decreasing digestion
