Plant Breeding Flashcards
what is monoecy?
male and female flowers on the same plant
what is andromonoecy?
when the flower is hermaphroditic - male
what is gynodioecy?
when the flower is hermaphroditic - female
what is dioecy?
when theres male OR female flowers on the same plant - male one plant, female other plant
whats the genetic model for gynodioecy?
1 + k > 2 this is the threshold for female advantage of male sterility
or the same but with >2(1 - s8) which takes inbreeding into account
whats the genetic model for androdioecy?
1 + k > 2 (1-s8)/(1-s) this takes into account premeption of access to ovvules in hermaphrodites due to selfing
what do monoecious popluations show more of?
inbreeding
differentiation between local populations
what does evolution of dioecy seem to be based on?
resource allocation
key features of dioecy?
broad eco and evo correlates
clades less species rich than related clades due to higher extinction or lower speciation
why is speciation supressed in higher clades?
local pops maintain higher genetic diversity so resulting in less divergence between populations
what did Vamosi and Otto Zooz conclude?
that sexual dimorphism would lead to less visitation of female flowers and so in turn extinction
