Plant Biodiversity- Aziem Mowzer Flashcards
What are the 4 plant divisions?
Bryophtes
Pteridophytes
Gymnosperms
Angiosperms
The 3 main examples of bryophytes
Moss
Hornwort
Liverwort
The main example of pteridophyte
Ferns
The 4 main examples of gymnosperms
Conifers
Cycads
Gnetales
Ginkgo
The 2 divisions of Angiosperms and what is the difference between the 2?
Monocotyledonous (monocots)
Dicotyledonous (dicots)
Monocotyledons have 1 cotyledon whereas Dicotyledons have 2 cotyledons.
MOnocotyledons have parallel veins on their leaves whereas dicotyledons have net veins on their leaves.
Monocots have an adventitious root system whereas dicots have a taproot system.
Monocots flower petals occur as multiples of 3 whereas dicots flower petals occur as either 4 or 5 petals.
the 2 definitive plant generations
Sporophyte
Gametophyte
Plants are divided according to presence or absence of:
Vascular tissue
True leaves, stem and roots
spores or seeds
fruits
Number of chromosomes in humans
46
Difference between normal cells and gametes (sperm and eggs)
Normal cells are diploids(2n)
Gametes are haploids(n)
Difference between the sporophyte and gametophyte generation
Sporophyte generation is asexual and produces spores
Gametophyte generation is sexual and produce gametes
Adaptations for a successfully life on land for plants
A cuticle stomata plant body differentiated into true roots, stems and leaves. vascular tissue Strengthening tissue Formation of seeds
Two Types of reproduction
Asexual reproduction
Sexual reproduction
Advantages of asexual reproduction
Advantages:
Large number of offspring are produced rapidly and simply
Energy expenditure is low
Offspring are identical to parents so they will be equally well suited to habitat
Advantages sexual reproduction
Advantages:\
Forms basis of evolution
Genetic material of parents is reshuffled
Greater genetic variation
disadvantages of asexual reproduction
Disadvantages:
No genetic variation
Less able to survive changes in environment
Can lead to overpopulation of clones
