Bacteria and Protista - Giovanni Pascoal Flashcards
1
Q
What is Bacteria?
A
- Smallest & simplest living organisms
- Occur in almost every habitat on Earth
- Some are Aerobic bacteria
- Some are Anaerobic bacteria
- Pathogenic (causes diseases) e.g: cholera, TB, anthrax
2
Q
What is the basic structure for a Bacteria?
A
- Unicellular occur as single cells
- Cell wall consisting of: Carbohydrates, lipids and proteins
- Pathogens covered with slime
- No true nucleus
- Genetic material is concentrated known as nucleoid
3
Q
what is the shape/form for a Bacteria?
A
- Rod-shaped (Bacillus or Bacilli)
- Spherical/ round (Coccus)
- Spiral-shaped (Spirillium)
- Comma-shaped (Vibrio)
4
Q
What are the general characteristics for Bacteria?
A
- Unicellular & Simple
- No true nucleus, prokaryotic
- Autotrophic, produce food by photosynthesis
- Majority are hetorotrophic
- Reproductions occurs asexually by binary fission
5
Q
What is the three types of heterotrophic substances?
A
- Parasitic: obtain food from living organisms
- Saprophytic: obtain food from dead organisms
- Mutualistic: obtains food from symbiotic relationships
6
Q
What is the basic structure of a Protist?
A
- Unicellular & Multicellular
- Algae can photosynthesis due chloroplast in their cells
- Locomotary structures occur
7
Q
What are the types of cell walls that occur in Protists?
A
- Green algae: cell walls of cellulose
- Diatoms: cell walls of sillica, shiny appearance
8
Q
General Characteristics of Protists?
A
- True nuclei therefor eukaryotic
- Unicellular
- Microsopically small
- Others are simple
- Multicellular
- primitive level of cell differentiation
- Autotrophic
- others heterotrophic
- Mostly assexual by binnary fission
- Live anywhere were water occurs
