Plant Anatomy Flashcards
What do leaves do?
absorb energy from the sun to produce glucose for food
What do roots do?
supports the plant and absorbs water and minerals
What do flowers do?
attract pollinators to help with pollination
What does the stem do?
holds the leaves up and transports minerals
Where is the blade and petiole located?
on a leaf
What is a blade and what does it do?
Is a broad, flat part of a leaf which provides a large area to capture sunlight.
What is petiole and what does it do?
Is the stem part of the leaf which supports the blade and turns it to the sun.
What do leaves take in during photosynthesis?
water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide
What do leaves produce during photosynthesis?
glucose and oxygen
What is a stomata and where is it located?
Is a small (microscopic) hole in the leaves which allows glucose to enter and exit the leaf.
What do you call 1 stomata?
stoma
What does the stomata let in?
CO2
What does the stomata let out?
O2 and H2O
What are stomata surrounded by?
guard cells
What are guard cells?
Control the opening and closing of the stomata.
What happens when the guard cells fill up with water and what happens when they lose water?
When the guard cells fill up with water the stomata opens while when the guard cells lose water the stomata closes.
What is the root of a plant called?
the internal anatomy
The stem is the ____ of the plant?
highway
Does the stem connect the leaves with the roots?
yes
What moves up from the roots to the leaves?
water and minerals
What moves down from the leaves to the roots?
glucose and nutrients
What is located inside a stem?
xylem and phloem
What does xylem do?
Xylem carries water, minerals, and nutrients up from the roots.
What does phloem do?
Phloem carries nutrients and glucose throughout the plant in all different directions.
