Photosynthesis Questions Flashcards
What is a chloroplast and where is it located?
A chloroplast is an organelle found in plant cells, specifically in the leaves of plants.
What is stroma and where is it found?
Stroma is a solution that surrounds thylakoids. Stroma is found inside the chloroplasts.
What is a thylakoid and where is it found?
A thylakoid is a flat disk that holds the chlorophylls inside the chloroplasts (most likely stacked with other thylakoids).
What is chlorophyll and where is it located?
Chlorophyll is a variety of pigments located in the membrane of the thylakoids.
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is purpose of photosynthesis?
To produce glucose from energy from the sun to keep the plant alive.
Where are chloroplasts found?
Plant cells
Why do most leaves appear green?
Most leaves appear green because chloroplasts contains the pigment chlorophyll which absorbs every color but reflects green yellow giving the leaves their green color.
What is the name of the pigment found in the chloroplast? Where is if found?
The name of the pigment found in the chloroplasts is called chlorophyll. It is found inside the thylakoids.
What 3 things are used to make glucose in photosynthesis?
sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide
Where does water enter the plant?
The roots
Once plants make glucose, what is it used for?
Glucose is used for energy for the plant to survive.
Is the purpose of photosynthesis to create oxygen for us to breathe? Why or why not?
It isn’t the purpose because photosynthesis’ main purpose to create glucose, the sugars, that the plant needs to survive. During photosynthesis the leaves happen to produce oxygen but that’s not the purpose of photosynthesis.
