Q

Maps and navigation

A

Topographic Maps: When combined with a compass are a very
powerful tool. These maps are detailed, accurate graphic
representations of features that appear on the Earth’s surface.

GPS: Can be more accurate, update and reliable but generally require service.

Q

Advantages and disadvantages using a GPS

A

Advantages
- Will accurately locate your position &
able to track your movements
- Can be used to enter in a route prior
to trip, which can then be followed
while on the trip.
- Will determine altitude; can be useful
on trips to the Alps

Disadvantages
* Satellites can take some time to be
found, and in thick vegetation maybe
not be able to be located.
* Usually needs batteries (although
solar charges can be found)
* Might be damaged by water, cold or
shock
