Definition of motivations
“Motivation is often described as the driving force or
reasoning behind a person’s desire to do something; the
explanation a person may give for wanting to achieve a
particular feat, complete a task or realise a dream.”
What is intrinsic motivation?
A motivation that we get from within ourselves.
- a good feeling we get from outdoor experiences
- an adrenaline rush
- a sense of personal satisfaction
What is extrinsic motivation?
A motivation that we get from outside ourselves, which is external to us.
- money
- to be the first
What are the four main groups of motivations?
- Competence or Mastery
- Socialisation
- Stimulus avoidance
- Cognitive Reward
Examples of Competence or Mastery
- be the first to complete the chosen activity
- to be competent in your outdoor skill
- to build physical strength
- set a record
Examples of Stimulus Avoidance
- health and wellbeing
- appreciation of nature
- escape from reality of everyday life
Examples of socialization
- family, friends, communities
- Share nature with others
- personal and social development of young people
- facilitate the achievement of human potential
- contemplation and reflection
- seek a feeling of independence
- learn from and about the environment
Examples of cognitive reward
- outdoor pursuits, personal challenges and achievement
- desire to prove something
- desire and adrenaline

Why do we participate in outdoor experiences?
- To escape regular life

What is flow?
Flow is: “being completely involved in an activity
for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies.
Every action, movement and thought follows
inevitably from the previous one. Your whole being
is involved, and you’re using your skills to the
utmost.”
