What’s the Parasagittal plane?
Sagittal planes that divide into unequal portions.
What’s the Midsagittal plane?
A vertical line that divides the body into equal left and right halves.
What’s the Frontal plane?
It’s a vertical line, but it’s perpendicular to the sagittal plane. Divides that body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions.
What’s the Transverse plane?
A horizontal line that divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions.
Ventral
Towards the front or “belly.”
Dorsal
Towards the back or spine.
Anterior
Towards the ventral side.
Posterior
Towards the dorsal side.
Cephalic
Towards the head or superior end.
Rostal
Towards the forehead or nose.
Caudal
Towards the tail or inferior end.
Superior
Above.
Inferior
Below.
Medial
Towards the middle plane.
Lateral
Away from the median plane.
Proximal
Closer to the point of attachment or origin.
The ankle is proximal to the knee
Distal
Farther from the point of attachment or origin.
Ipsilateral
On the same side of the body.
Ipsi: same
Contralateral
On opposite sides of the body.
Contra: Opposite
Superficial
Closer to the body surface.
Skin is superficial to the bone
Deep
Farther from the body surface.
