Planes of movement + joint movement Flashcards
What are the 3 planes of motion?
- Sagittal Plane
- Frontal Plane
- Transverse Plane
Plane of Motion
Saggital Plane
- Separates right + left (moving forward and back)
- flexion (decrease in joint angle) and extension (increase in joint angle), all joints do this
- they all flex forward + extend back except the knee
Plane of Motion
Frontal Plane
- Divides anterior and posterior (front + back) (moving side to side)
- Abduction (move away from midline) + adduction (back toward midline)
- primarly ball-and-socket joints (hip + shoulder)
Plane of Motion
Transverse Plane
- Separates upper and lower half
- right/left rotation or internal/external rotation
Joint Movement
Horizontal Abduction and Adduction
Arm 90 degrees moving it along the horizon
- bring in front of you: adduction
- bring it back away: abduction
Joint Movement
Supination and Pronation
Elbow flexed at 90
- supination: palm up
- pronation: palm down
Joint Movement
Radial and Ulnar Deviation
Radial (outside forearm) Ulnar (inside forearm)
- radial deviation: shift wrist to move hand away from midline, thumb towards side of arm
- ulnar deviation: bringing little finger towards forearm
Joint Movement
Dorsiflexion and Plantarflexion
Dorsi: bringing toe up to shin
Plantar: pointing the toe
Joint Movement
Inversion and Eversion
In: like supination, lifting up inside of foot, pointing sole of foot in
Ev: like pronation, pointing the sole of the foot out
Joint Movement
Circumduction
Combines movement in all 3 planes of motion
- arm circles
- only at shoulder and hips
Spatial Terminology
Anterior + Posterior
A - front side
P - back side
Spatial Terminology
Superior + Inferior
S - above
I - below
Spatial Terminology
Medial + Lateral
M - closer to midline
L - away from midline
Spatial Terminology
Proximal + Distal
P - end of bone closer to midline
D - end of bone further from midline
Spatial Terminology
Plantar + Dorsal
P - bottom of the foot
D - top/back of the foot
