Passive Assessments Flashcards
Know what to look for in passive assessments
What is a passive assessment?
The client is not physically doing anything, mostly just looking at them
What are the 3 types of passive assessments?
- Cardiovascular assessment
- Body comp. assessment
- Passive postural assessment
Cardiovascular assessment
Resting Heart Rate RHR
- 15 seconds in bed in the AM, then X4
*first beat counts as 0
- areas to take it: carotid artery, radial artery, brachial artery
- average HR is 60-100
Heart Rate Variability
- difference in time interval between heart beats, score 0-100, higher is better, means body is ready for stress
Resting Blood Pressure
Body Comp. Assessments
- Bioelectric impedance measurements: electric shock
- Others: how clothes fit, measurements
Passive Postural Assessment
What is used to assess posture
Five-Point Passive Postural Assessment:
Client should stand relaxes, barefoot, and use plumb line as visual reference
1. Ankles & Feet
2. Knees
3. Hips & Pelvis
4. Shoulders
5. Head & Neck
Passive Postural Assessment
Ankles & Feet
Look to see if feet are
1. Pronated /\ (no arch)
2. Neutral I I
3. Supinated \/ (excessive arch)
Passive Postural Assessment
Knees
- Hyperextension (knees bent backwards)
- Valgus (knees move inward toward midline) - tightness in quads
- Varus (knees bent outward away from midline, bowlegged) - tight hamstrings
Passive Postural Assessment
Hips & Pelvis
Hips: look for asymmetry and for an elevated side
Pelvis:
- Anterior pelvis tilt - butt out
- Posterior pelvis tilt - butt in
Passive Postural Assessment
Shoulders
- Shoulder adduction (-3in between scapula and spine) and abduction (+3in between medial border of scapula and spine)
- Shoulder elevation and depression (look at posterior view to look at scapula or anterior view to look at collarbone)
Passive Postural Assessment
Head & Neck
See if the chin lines up with the shoulders
Before any other assessments, what should the client’s HR and BP be?
HR less than 100 BPM
BP lower than 140/100
Which assessments should you do for your client?
Whatever is best for them and goes with their goals
