Placentation Flashcards
What are the 3 phases of placental development?
- Chorionic (histotrophic)
- Choriovitelline (histotrophic)
- Chorioallantoic (mostly hematrophic)
What are areolae and in which species are they found?
Areas of transfer in chorioallantoic placenta over areas of uterine glands; found in all non-deciduate species
Which species have deciduate placenta (i.e. have uterine bleeding normally at parturition)? Which cell types are involved in invasion?
Carnivores
Rodents
Higher primates
Syncytiotrophoblasts - invade uterus (as well as cytotrophoblasts)
Decidual cells - maternal, immunological role
Which species have diffuse placenta?
Horse, pig
Which species have cotyledonary placenta?
Ruminants
Which species have zonary placenta?
Carnivores (dog, cat, ferret)
- Ferret/raccoon = double
Rings are sites of hem atrophic exchange; where syncytiotrophoblasts form
Which species have discoid placenta?
Higher primates
Rodents
Which species have epitheliochorial placenta?
Pig, horse
Which species have synepitheliochorial placenta? Which cell types are found there, and what do they produce?
Ruminants
Binucleate cells - make lactogen - similar to growth hormone
Which species have endotheliochorial placenta?
Carnivores
What is the difference between the chorioamnion and the amniochorion?
Amniochorion - pig (and human) only - vascularized courtesy of allantois
Chorioamnion - cows and all other animals - no vascularization
Which species have hemochorial placenta?
Higher primates
Rodents
What is the dominant protein in the uterine milk of pigs, and what does it do?
Uteroferrin; transfers iron for development of fetal RBCs
Where is the trilaminar omphalopleure and in which species is it clinically important?
Where yolk sac meets chorion; horses
Which areas lack micro cotyledons in the horse?
- Oviducts
2. Cervical star (end of the uterine body)
