Fallen dramatically from 2012 = 1.92
What is the problem with an ageing population
Not enough babies being born - will cause future problems with less economically active to support the elderly
How many extra births does Singapore require per year to maintain the population
60,000
What is National Night and what was the aim of the rap
2012 - a collaboration between the government and the TNC Mentos, during National Night (day to remember the country’s separation from Malaysia).
The rap was played after the parade and included the line ‘I’m a patriotic husband, you’re my patriotic wife, let’s do our civic duty and manufacture life’.
Aim was to encourage Singaporean citizens to ‘let their patriotism explode’
Give some Singapore government measures to deal with decreasing population
- Government spends $1.3 billion per year to encourage citizens to have children
- $15,000 for each child, extended maternity leave + tax reaks - little effect
- Actively seeking immigration - causing resentment
- Subsidising cost of fertility treatment
- Cash bonuses
Why are fewer children being born
Parents putting off having children due to travell, work and stress
