Pituitary Drugs Flashcards
1
Q
Cosyntropin
A
- Synthetic corticotropin
- Travels to adrenal cortex and stimulates secretion of cortisol
- Does the same thing as ACTH - targets adrenal gland, mediates adaptation to stress and starvation, promotes production of glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, androgens
- Used for diagnosis of adrenocortical insufficiency
2
Q
Menotropins
A
- Same pharmacological effects as FSH; many of the other gonadotropins also stimulate FSH
- FSH - stimulates oogenesis and follicular growth in females and spermatogenesis in males
3
Q
Somatropin
A
- Mimics growth hormone
- Stimulates anabolic processes
- Human growth hormone for treatment of hypopituitary dwarfism
4
Q
Octreotide acetate
A
- Antagonizes the effect of natural GH by inhibiting GH release
- A synthetic polypeptide structurally and pharmacologically similar to GH release–inhibiting factor (aka somatostatin); inhibits GH
5
Q
Mentropins, clomiphene citrate
A
- Increase LH levels and the chance of pregnancy
- LH - stimulates ovulation and estrogen release; stimulates interstitial cells to promote spermatogenesis and testosterone secretion
6
Q
Thyrotropin α
A
Increases the production and secretion of thyroid hormones
7
Q
Vasopressin
A
- Effects posterior pituitary
- Mimics the actions of ADH
- Vasoconstrictor (can be used for hypotensive emergencies)
performs all the physiological functions of ADH
8
Q
Desmopressin acetate
A
A synthetic vasopressin
9
Q
Oxytocin
A
Targets mammary glands, stimulates ejection of milk, and contractions of uterine smooth muscle
