A
- Many indications such as: adrenocortical deficiency, autoimmune disorders, asthma, allergies, cancers, COPD, endocrine disorders, GI diseases, inflammatory disorders, rheumatic disorders, among many others
- Many side effects – see table 34-4 in textbook
- Weight gain, GI upset, and superinfections are common examples
- Can cause thinning of skin and atrophy
- Long term use can lead to osteoporosis! (used with loop diuretics can lead to hypocalcemia)
- Many interactions (ie: diabetes, diuretics, NSAIDs, etc)
- Contraindications: Cataracts, glaucoma, active peptic ulcers, depression

A
- Glucocorticoid
- Preferred for anti inflammatory and immunosuppressive
- Can be used for asthma and chronic bronchitis
- Minimal mineralocorticoid properties
