A
  • Many indications such as: adrenocortical deficiency, autoimmune disorders, asthma, allergies, cancers, COPD, endocrine disorders, GI diseases, inflammatory disorders, rheumatic disorders, among many others
  • Many side effects – see table 34-4 in textbook
  • Weight gain, GI upset, and superinfections are common examples
  • Can cause thinning of skin and atrophy
  • Long term use can lead to osteoporosis! (used with loop diuretics can lead to hypocalcemia)
  • Many interactions (ie: diabetes, diuretics, NSAIDs, etc)
  • Contraindications: Cataracts, glaucoma, active peptic ulcers, depression

  • Glucocorticoid
  • Preferred for anti inflammatory and immunosuppressive
  • Can be used for asthma and chronic bronchitis
  • Minimal mineralocorticoid properties
