What determines pitch
The number of vibrations that occur per second
Where are higher pitches placed on the stave
Higher on the stave
Where are lower pitches found on the stave
Lower on the stave
What is a melody
A succession of pitches or notes used in a meaningful way
What are the two types of melodies
Disjunct and conjunct
What is a conjunct melody
A melody which moves in a small steps.
What is a disjunct melody
A melody in which there are large distances between successive tones
What characteristics does a disjunct melody have
It creates energy and drama and often call for skill in performances
What are the characteristics of a conjunct melody
They are capable of sweeter, more lyrical effects and they are usually easier to sing or perform
What is a strong beat
This is the strongest accent in the bar and falls right at the beginning of the bar.
What is a weak beat
These are the other crotchet beats of the bar
What is an offbeat
These are any notes which fall between the strong and/or weak beats
How should we beam notes quavers or semi quaver
When beaming quavers or semi quavers:
First circle the notes of each beat
Then from there you can beam notes that are in the same circle. If they are not in the same circle they should not be beamed together
What are each of the beats in 2/4 time
First beat is strong, second beat is weak
What are each of the beats in 3/4 time
The first beat is strong and the last two are weak
