Piston Group Flashcards
1
Q
What are the components of a piston?
A
- connecting rod
- gudgeon pin
- piston rings ( 2 compression and 1 oil)
- bearings
- piston
2
Q
What does the piston do?
A
- converts heat energy into kinetic energy in the form of linear motion
- creates compression
- seals and contains combustion gasses within the cylinder
3
Q
What types of position are there and out of what?
A
- 1 piece: we have
- 2 piece
- made out of aluminium or steel
4
Q
What do diesel engine piston have that petrol engine pistons?
A
- a recessed crown with centre cone
- there to help swirl the fuel so that it mixes better with air
- achieving complete and efficient combustion
5
Q
How are pistons rings installed?
A
- rings placed 120 degree position
- the gals faced away from thrust side of the piston
6
Q
What components make up the connecting rod?
A
- small end
- small end bearing
- big end bearings
- big end
- big end bolts
7
Q
What’s does the cylinder head do?
A
- contains valves
- seals the cylinder and creates combustion chamber
- carries the valve train components
- allows air in and exhaust gasses out
- holds injectors
- made form cast iron
