Engine Block Flashcards
1
Q
What does the engine block do?
A
- makes up the main structure of the engine
- an attachment point for the auxiliary components
- holds all the major internal components
- usually one piece but can be joined together in some modular designs
- has the cylinders bored into it, sometimes directly into the parent metal
- often incorporating sleeve or liners of which there are two types dry or wet
- made out of cast iron
2
Q
What is is a turbocharger?
A
- a type of compressor (air)
- made up of an impeller/ compressor wheel, a turbine and two housings
- they are linked by a common shaft
- compressor housing is usually made from aluminium and turbine housing from cast iron
3
Q
How does the turbocharger work?
A
- it works by taking wasted heat from the combustion process, that would normally be expelled straight out the exhaust and using it
- to drive the turbine, the movement of and expansion of these gases is what drives it
- the turbine is attached via a shaft to the compressor wheel, which then turns at the same rate, drawing in clean air from the filters
- the rotating motion thought the blade and housing design increase the air density
- which then increases volumetric efficiency
- allowing more fuel to be burnt, resulting in higher power output
4
Q
What does the radiator do?
A
- used for heat transfer, to cool the coolant
5
Q
What does ATAAC stand for?
A
Air to air after cooler
6
Q
What does WTAAC stand for?
A
Water to air after cooler
7
Q
What is an after cooler? And what it does?
A
- A type of heat exchanger and is aether air to air or water to air
-it works by cooling the compressed air from the turbocharger - which further increases its density and allowing for even more power gains
