Q

Which type of oak barrel is preferred for PN and why?

A

Large old barrels because they impart less oak flavours which might otherwise overwhelm the delicate flavours of the wine. The wine maker will try to achieve a balance of fruit and oak in the best PNs

A

It has a northerly latitude and a mostly moderate climate

26
Q

A

Casablanca Valley on the west coast is cooled by both sea breezes and morning fog from the Pacific Ocean. It produces very fruity PN which has cooked strawberry flavours.

Walker Bay which is cooled by southerly sea breezes.

28
Q

A

The regions of Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula are cooled by Southern Ocean breezes unlike most Australian wine regions

29
Q

Which is the Premier black grape of NZ?

A

Pinot Noir

30
Q

A

Marlborough and Martinborough have cool to moderate climates.
Central Otago is further south and the vineyards are protected by a ring of mountains from rain and sea breezes. The vines experience intensely sunny days and cool nights.

31
Q

How might one differentiate between a Burgundy PN, a Californian or Oregon PN?

A

The core fruit flavours will be similar, ie red fruits, in all cases. However the Californian PN will have riper fruit flavours due to the warmer growing conditions. Oregon and Burgundy will have fresher fruit flavours they come from cooler areas than California.
