Normally pale to medium red
What are common primary aromas of PN?
Red fruits such as strawberry, raspberry and red cherry. Ranging from fresh to cooked depending on ripeness/ growing region.
What aromas might oak add?
Vanilla, cloves, smoke
Which climate is best for growing PN
Cool to moderate to produce best quality grapes
What colour and thickness is the skin of PN?
It is a black, thin skinned grape
Which type of oak barrel is preferred for PN and why?
Large old barrels because they impart less oak flavours which might otherwise overwhelm the delicate flavours of the wine. The wine maker will try to achieve a balance of fruit and oak in the best PNs
When should PN be drank?
Normally when young to enjoy the fruity flavours but the best can be aged.
What tertiary flavours can develop in the bottle?
Forest floor and mushrooms after several years.
Which region is regarded as the home of PN?
Burgundy in France.
Can PN be grown successfully in warmer regions?
Yes provided there are moderating weather influences which cool the growing region eg sea breezes, fog, mist, altitude
Why is Burgundy so well suited to PN.
The climate ranges from cool in the North to moderate in the South. It is best suited to the moderate areas where it can ripen fully.
What makes the best sites for growing PN in Burgundy?
South- and South-east facing slopes that benefit from extra sunlight can produce concentrated and complex wines.
Where are the best vineyards situated in Burgundy?
The Cote d’Or
What are the two halves of Cote d’Or called?
The northern half is Cote de Nuits and the southern is Cotes de Beaune.
What is the Regional Appellation of Burgundy?
Bourgogne AOC which covers the whole of Burgundy. Grapes can be used from any vineyard in Burgundy.
