When is an instrument rating required?
When PIC under IFR or in IMC
When carrying passengers for hire on XC flights or at night
In class A airspace
Special VFR at night
When is an IFR flight plan required?
When flying IFR through controlled airspace, A airspace, or in IMC
When is an alternate airport required?
They are always required unless there is an instrument approach availible at the destination
and for at least 1 hour before and 1 hour after arrival ceiling must be at least 2000’ and visibility greater than 3SM
RNAV
Area navigation. Allows navigation on any path without needing to overfly ground facilities
