A
A small scale version of an investigation that takes place before the real investigation is conducted

A
To check that procedures, materials, measuring scales, etc., work and to allow the researcher to make changes or modifications if necessary

Why might we use a pilot study for an Experiment
A
- Allows the researcher to identify any potential issues
- Can modify the design or procedure, saving time and money in the long run

Why might we use a pilot study for a Self-Report (Questionnaires + Interviews)
A
- Helpful to try out questions in advance
- Can remove or reword those that are ambiguous or confusing

Why might we use a pilot study for an Observational Study
A
- Provides a way of checking coding systems before the real investigations is undertaken
- May be an important part of training observers
