Pilot Flashcards
Everything related to Pilot section
What do you need in your possession to fly solo as a student pilot?
Government issued ID with a photo.
Student pilot certificate - never expires
Medical
Endorsements (not needed once PIC, for students)
What medical do you have? What are the different medicals
Third class medical. The different medicals are First class, which is required for Airline Transport Pilots (ATP), second class which is required for Commercial pilots, and third class, which is required for private and recreational pilots.
What are the expirations for the different medicals and what happens when they expire?
If you are under 40, the medical certificates are
First class: 12 months
Second class: 12 months
Third class: 60 months
If you are over 40, they are:
First class: 6 months
Second class: 12 months
Third class: 24 months
They waterfall, so is under 40, first and second class medicals can only enact third class privileges.
If over 40, First can only enact second class after 6 months, then first and second can only enact third after 12 months total, for the rest of the third class period.
What are some of the endorsements for for student solo?
TSA endorsement
Pre solo aeronautical knowledge
Pre solo flight training (valid for 90 days)
XC flight training.
XC planning per trip.
Written test
Written test deficiencies
Practical test flight proficiencies
Practical test
What are some of the additional endorsements one could have?
Complex aircraft
High performance
High altitude
Tailwheel
What is the complex aircraft endorsement
An aircraft with a constant speed prop, retractable landing gear, and flaps.
You need ground and flight training from an instructor for this.
What is a high performance endorsement
An aircraft with more that 200 horsepower.
You need ground and flight training from an instructor for this.
What is a high altitude endorsement
An aircraft that can go above 25,000 feet MSL
You need ground and flight training from an instructor for this.
What is a tailwheel endorsement
An aircraft with a tailwheel rather than a nose wheel. You need flight training from an instructor for this.
What is the personal checklist/How do you know if you’re safe/good to fly today?
The IMSAFE checklist.
(I)MSAFE is?
I is for illness. You shouldn’t fly with an illness, especially one that would become more debilitating with a change in altitude (sinus infections, ear infections)
I(M)SAFE is?
M is for medication. You shouldn’t fly if you’re using certain medications, like Benadryl, as it can make you sleepy. A list of some medications can be found on FAA/OTC or you can contact your AME.
IM(S)AFE is?
S is for Stress. You want to have some stress. However you want to be careful if you have chronic stress, as that could make you too relaxed in a situation where you shouldn’t be.
IMS(A)FE is?
A if for alcohol. You can’t have any 8 hours before flying. You can’t have a hangover. And your blood alcohol level needs to be lower than .04%
IMSA(F)E is?
F is for fatigue and food. You don’t want to be tired and want to make sure you’re not bothered by hunger.
IMSAF(E) is?
E is for emotions. You want to make sure your emotional state is ok and you aren’t effected by something (like a recent car accident)
What does it mean to be PIC (91.3)?
Give your own answer, however, textbook wise:
1.The pilot in command of an aircraft is directly responsible for, and is the final authority as to the operation of the aircraft.
2.In an emergency requiring immediate action, the PIC can deviate from any rule in part 91 to meet the extent of the emergency.
3. Any pilot who deviates from rules in part 91, if requested by an administrator, must send a written report to the administrator.
What can we do for preflight (91.103)?
We can go over the NWKRAFT checklist.
(N)WKRAFT is?
N is for Notams (Notice to air missions)
N(W)CRAFT is?
W is for weather briefing. A briefing is legal when you have a time and tail number for the briefing
NW(K)RAFT is?
K is for known ATC delays. Delays in flight that the ATCs report for things like weather
NWK(R)AFT is?
R is for runway lengths. You should know or have a supplement for the runways you will use and for the alternatives planned
NWKR(A)FT is?
A is for Alternates. You should have alternate airports/runways chosen incase you need to deviate from your flight plan.
NWKRA(F)T is?
F is for fuel. You need to know how much fuel you will be expected to use for the flight, and additional fuel needed as necessary (30 minutes of fuel overflying destination at cruising speed during the day, and 45 minutes of fuel during the night).
NWKRAF(T) is?
T is for Take Off and Landing data.
What is Currency?
Currency is the legal ability for the pilot to fly or carry passengers.
In order to carry passengers, you need to have completed 3 landings within the last 90 days. For night VFR, they need to be at a full stop. The night landings will cover day time, but not the other way around.
What is Proficiency
Proficiency is how well you feel flying an aircraft if it has been a while since the last time you’ve flown. You might be current, but that doesn’t mean you feel proficient.
What is a flight review?
If you haven’t earned another rating within 2 years from acquiring private, you need to do a flight review consisting of 1 hour of ground and 1 hour of flight with an instructor. This is needed every 24 months.
The Wings program can be in place of your ground.
What is the Wings program
Wings is a program by the FAA to try and help avoid accidents that happen in aviation, and review safety knowledge.
