Pigs Flashcards
Porcine respiratory disease complex -pneumonia
Complicated by the immunosuppressive nature of some pathogens
- PRRS – also a primary / secondary cause of pneumonia
- SIV – also a primary / secondary cause of pneumonia
- PCV-2 – also a primary / secondary cause of pneumonia
- Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae – also a primary / secondary cause of pneumonia – previously thought of as a finisher disease but immunosuppression disease in weaner disease
Clinical signs
Coughing – low level common without pneumonia / requiring treatment
Anorexia
Lethargy
Losing body weight – can be sudden or may manifest as increasing variation over a period of time
Increased hair growth
Increased respiratory effort
Increased mortality
- Can be sudden acute deaths without clinical signs
- Can be due to increased number euthanized due to excessive body condition loss
ELISA - blood, oral fluids
PCR - blood, oral fluids, nasal and tonsillar swabs
PM
Histopathology
PCR - tissue, blood, BAL, swab
Culture - tissue, swab
PRRS - porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome
The primary vector for transmission of the virus is the infected pig and contaminated semen
Two distinct clinical phases: reproductive failure and postweaning respiratory diseases. The reproductive phase of the disease includes increases in the number of stillborn piglets, mummified fetuses, premature farrowings, and weak-born pigs.
Sow vaccine and youngstock vaccine
